SAKUNTALA'S RING: WEB COMIC AND SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN

"Sakuntala's Ring" is a webcomic created in 2023 in collaboration with Martina Borsche for the Bayerisches Staatsballett and published on 10 February 2024 (www.in-toon.com). The project is based on the Indian verse drama "Sakuntala" by the poet Kalidasa. This verse drama is one of the most important sources of material for the ballet classic "La Bayadère" by Marius Petipa. As part of the tanz:digital funding project, seven illustrators were each commissioned to graphically realise one act of Kalidasa's "Sakuntala". Renu Hossain (RENU) created a sound design using a recording of "La Bayadère" specially made by the Bayerisches Staatsorchester under the direction of Michael Schmidtsdorff.

EDUCATION PROJECT ON THE BALLET "LA BAYDÈRE"

The Japanese stage and costume designer Tomio Mohri opted for an unconventional design for the Munich production of "La Bayadère" in 1998. He combined Japanese prints, fairytale elements and motifs from classical ballet to create a fantasy world. His interest in graphics in Japanese art was the catalyst for realising "Sakuntala's Ring" in illustrated form.
